Edit a reading and compare three encodings: the PRD's JSON, the PRD's ASCII string, and the STE binary frame the firmware actually sends. The costs count every byte the carrier bills, both directions, including IP, TLS/DTLS and MQTT. Batching several readings into one frame cuts cost more than shrinking the payload does.

Pillar 2 · Edge diagnostics & offline buffer
When the tower goes down, the node keeps protecting itself and logs 60 s summaries to flash. Nothing is deleted until the gateway confirms receipt. The early-warning detector is deliberately simple: trend extrapolation and a load z-score over a 40-sample window. That's cheap enough for a Cortex-M0, and it catches runaways minutes before they trip.
